This Week The midterms are tomorrow. You know that. Every screen you own has been reminding you for months. I have opinions about tomorrow. Strong ones. If you've read this newsletter for more than a month, you can probably guess them. This email isn't where they go. Most of you have voted already. So this isn't that email either. There's nothing left to do about tomorrow tonight, which is its own strange kind of quiet. I'm also not going to tell you it'll be fine. I don't know that. What I do know is that the stress level in this country is up, it's in my house too, and I've been feeling it. This newsletter is usually me handing you something. A reframe, a practice tool, a story from the hall. I sat down to write this one and I didn't have anything to hand you. So I'm not going to pretend I do. The Prescription There isn't one this week. I thought about writing the version where the practice room is a refuge, long tones are a kind of meditation, and music will get us through. Some of that might even be true. But I'd be writing it so the email felt finished, not because I believe it's what you need from me on a Monday like this one. So here's the only thing I've got, and it isn't advice. I'm feeling it too. If you've been holding it together all week in front of students, audiences, and the people next to you in the section, you're not the only one doing that. Let me say that again. You're not the only one. And whatever happens Tuesday, or over the coming months, on Wednesday you'll still have a warm-up to do. That's not nothing. It might be the steadiest thing any of us has.
